Cartagen Molecular Systems, Inc. Introduces New Kits to Support Insect Genomic Research

SEATTLE, WA – January 23, 2006 - Cartagen Molecular Systems, Inc. announced today the launch of two new kits developed specifically for Insect Genetics applications. The Rapid Homogenization Kit for Arthropod DNA Amplification and the Genomic DNA Extraction Kit for Arthropods expand Cartagen’s product offerings for agricultural biotechnology applications. These unique products are designed specifically for researchers facing the challenges presented by the complex chitin exoskeletons of Arthropods.
The development of the Rapid Homogenization Kit for Arthropod DNA Amplification resulted through work with the USDA-ARS in Ft. Pierce, Florida. The kit incorporates BioMasher™ sample homogenization technology, optimized reagents, and an easy-to follow protocol.

The BioMasher sample homogenizer breaks through complex arthropod tissue allowing for rapid enzymatic digestion and cell disruption. Samples are microcentrifuged through the BioMasher filter column to further disrupt cells then heated to inactivate the enzyme. In less than 20 minutes, DNA from even the most complex Arthropod tissue is ready for PCR. Successful PCR results have been attained from a variety of DNA samples, including museum preserved specimens dating back eighty years. The Rapid Homogenization Kit for Arthropod DNA Amplification can greatly facilitate research into insect-borne disease since samples carrying disease vectors can be quickly and easily prepared for PCR analysis.

Cartagen’s new Genomic DNA Extraction Kit for Arthropods yields high quality DNA from a variety of Arthropod sample types. The kit combines an optimized Proteinase K-based digestion with a convenient, column-based procedure that isolates genomic DNA, ready for downstream analysis. The Genomic DNA Extraction Kit for Arthropods is available in both single column and 96-well plate formats.

“Cartagen is committed to supporting agricultural biotechnology research,” commented Steven Kirsher, President and CEO of Cartagen. “We will continue to work with our customers to develop products and applications designed to meet the needs of this highly exciting and diverse field.”

The Rapid Homogenization Kit for Arthropod DNA Amplification and the Genomic DNA Extraction Kit for Arthropods are in a series of Cartagen products that build upon technology licensed from an ongoing collaboration with Investigen DNA Biotechnologies, of Hercules, CA.
