Cartagen Acquires BioMasher® Distribution Rights From Nippi Inc.

SEATTLE, WA - February 14, 2005 - Cartagen Molecular Systems, Inc. announced today that it has entered into two key licensing agreements with Nippi, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) focusing on Nippi’s innovative BioMasher technology. These agreements provide Cartagen exclusive sales and distribution rights to the BioMasher technology in the United States and Canada as well as rights to incorporate the BioMasher technology into Cartagen’s molecular biology kits for worldwide distribution.

Founded in 1907, Nippi is a world leader in the research and manufacturing of products for the food and health industries. The BioMasher technology was developed by Nippi to rapidly prepare total cell lysates for use in their diagnostic assay for Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE), commonly known as “Mad Cow Disease”. In addition to research into the diagnosis of BSE, Nippi was one of the pioneers in the development of collagen-based health and beauty products and continues to provide leadership in this field.

"Nippi’s solution to the need for creating rapid cell lysates is an innovative breakthrough in sample preparation" commented Steven Kirsher, President and CEO of Cartagen. “The BioMasher technology has proven to be a key enabling technology in Nippi’s diagnostic tests for BSE, and we have found that the technology has broad potential in the field of genomic and proteomic research.” Working together with Nippi and R&D partner, Investigen, Inc. (Hercules, CA), Cartagen has already developed kits to rapidly prepare PCR-ready DNA from plant and insect tissue.

Cartagen Molecular Systems, Inc. was founded in early 2003 to manufacture and sell innovative reagent kits for life science research. Based in Seattle, Washington, the company focuses on providing competitively-priced tools in convenient formats that enable life scientists to perform selected key techniques and methods which increase the pace of their research.
